Key Points
- LCL is normally charged by W/M, whichever is greater between weight and volume.
- Marks, package count, outer packing and warehouse booking details must be clear before cargo entry.
- Destination charges should be confirmed early, especially for India, the Middle East and South America.
1. Check volume and weight first
LCL cargo is not charged simply by shipment count. It is usually charged by W/M, meaning the greater of weight ton or measurement ton. Light cargo, heavy cargo and irregular packing can lead to very different costs.
2. Confirm packing and shipping marks before warehouse entry
LCL cargo is consolidated with other shipments, so outer packing, marks, package count and warehouse entry data must be accurate. Wooden cases, pallets, fragile goods, liquids and battery products should be declared in advance.
- Confirm warehouse address, entry reference and cut-off time.
- Package count and packing type should match customs and warehouse data.
- Cargo photos, carton dimensions and mark photos can reduce communication errors.
3. Destination charges must be explained in advance
Destination charges for LCL can be higher than expected, especially in India, the Middle East and parts of South America. When quoting, compare origin charges, ocean freight and common destination fee items together.
